Is SomEx right for you?

SomEx is a good fit for you if you…

  • Have experienced traumatic events in your life

  • Are struggling with trauma symptoms, substance abuse, or attachment disruption

  • Notice talk therapy alone has not been effective in resolving your trauma

  • Feel stuck, even though you have read self-help books and have tried therapy

You may be wondering what SomEx is:

SomEx is an inter-relational method of therapy aimed at creating emotional harmony and paving the way for reconnection to self.

A therapy method created by Kent Fisher and Michelle Rappaport, SomEx (Somatic experiential therapy) is effective in helping substance abuse, trauma, and attachment disorders.

SomEx is focused on the importance of emotional regulation and integration of the left (logical/rational) and right (emotional) hemispheres of the brain.

Often times unresolved trauma in our bodies can wreak havoc on the nervous system and make living life to the fullest difficult. The SomEx approach works to create harmony in the nervous system and allow individuals to reconnect to themselves.

How does SomEx look in sessions?

SomEx can look different depending on each person who comes into the space. Often times, it starts with grounding/calming exercise to help you drop into your body and notice what is happening in the moment. Explore the drop down list to see more what we do in sessions!

  • Resources are places, people, or things that bring you pleasant feelings. Sometimes this might look like something soft and cozy to hold in session, or just thinking about a positive memory you have. There aren't any rules! Resourcing is important so that when something painful or overwhelming comes up you can go back to that source of grounding whenever you need to.

  • When we focus on the pleasant feelings, often times pain follows closely behind. Acknowledging and touching these pain points are a part of stretching your ability to hold overwhelming or tender emotions in a way that feels better. It is kind of like building muscles in the gym!

This differs from talk therapy because we don't actually need to talk about the painful memory to process it. Instead you are encouraged to name the experience and energy in your physical body. Your intuition and body have the answers needed to heal, and I will support in walking alongside you throughout the process.

  • Exploring painful parts that come up supported by your own resourcing and in a safe space is crucial to healing. This helps your logical/meaning making side of your brain connect with the emotional processing side of your brain and build new experiences. This healing process promotes increased resiliency and the ability to rediscover your authentic self with reduced shame, overwhelm, and anxiety.
